Student Health Insurance
If you’re a student, you know how expensive everything suddenly gets. And if you don’t have health insurance — it’s probably one of the last things on your mind.
But you shouldn't go without health insurance — because if you had to go to the hospital for some reason, the bills can be thousands of dollars.
And health insurance does more than just protect you from emergencies. It helps you pay for prescriptions drugs, contacts, eyeglasses, and routine check-ups with your doctor.
Sure, it’s hard to really feel the need for any health insurance right now. But your school might require you to have insurance. So if you aren’t covered, they’ll offer you one of their plans — but their plans aren’t always the best deal. It's best to compare different rates so you can find the most affordable plan.
Affordable Health Insurance Options
Managed care is the most affordable health insurance option for students. In managed care plans, you get care from a “network” of doctors, hospitals, and other providers.
Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) are the cheapest managed care option. You’ll get low monthly premiums and co-payments — and many times, no deductible. But to stay covered, you have to get care from within your network of healthcare providers.
Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) are the more flexible option. You’ll be able to move in and out of the network and your coverage will go with you. PPOs are nice if you are more comfortable with a doctor that doesn’t happen to be in the network.
Also be aware that when you study abroad, most plans don't cover you in other countries. If you’re thinking about studying outside of the U.S., consider getting an international insurance policy.
Finding the most affordable student health plans is easiest when you have options in front of you. When you request free health quotes, you can compare plans online in just minutes.
