What’s An FFS Plan?

Before managed care plans like PPOs and HMOs, the type insurance that most people had were Fee For Service (FFS) plans. These plans were popular because they give you the most complete coverage you can find.

The Advantages Of Fee For Service

When it comes to a Fee For Service plan’s coverage versus a managed care plan's coverage, FFS plans are more comprehensive and more flexible. The advantages of a Fee For Service plan are:

  • Complete coverage. As long as the medical service you need is covered by your plan, you can go to any doctor or hospital you want. And most medical procedures are covered.
  • No waiting hours on end. Because you have more choice over which doctors and hospitals you see, you’re less likely to have to sit forever in a waiting room behind dozens of others.
  • No need for referrals. Go to any specialist or hospital you choose — and you won’t have to wait for any approvals to get care.

The Disadvantages

The main disadvantage of Fee For Service plans is their cost. Because they offer so much coverage with so few restrictions, FFS plans usually have high premiums, deductibles, and co-payments.

And Fee For Service plans may not offer coverage for preventive care such as well-baby care, immunizations, or physicals. For larger families or for regular doctor’s visits, managed care will probably be more cost-effective.
