Family Health Insurance

Every family has their own unique needs. And you want to make sure you find the insurance coverage that keeps your family healthy.

And it’s important to find affordable health coverage, because no one wants another expensive monthly bill.

What Are My Choices?

There are two ways to go when it comes to family health insurance — individual health plans for each family member, or one plan that covers your whole family.

Buying one plan for your entire family is usually the more affordable option. In many family plans, only two members have to meet their deductible before full coverage starts for the entire family.

Individual plans for each family member can be more expensive. But if someone in your family requires more care — because of a chronic condition like diabetes — a group premium could be raised. So you can save money if every family member had their own plan.

Exploring Your Family Health Insurance Options

There are many different kinds of group family health plans or individual plans for each family member. Here are some of the most common:

  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs). Family PPO plans offer flexible coverage through a network of pediatricians, doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers.
  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). Family HMO plans usually offer the most affordable coverage you can find. But HMOs come with an important restriction: you need to get care within the provider network to get coverage.
  • Fee For Service Plans (FFS). Fee For Service plans are the traditional model of health insurance and they’re the most comprehensive. With a family FFS plan, you’ll have the freedom to go to any doctor you want. They have the most flexible coverage— but they’re also the most expensive.
  • Point Of Service Plans (POS). POS plans are a combination of the traditional and the managed care models. In a POS plan, you’ll choose a primary care physician — just like in an HMO. And you’ll have a network of care providers that you can use to save money. But you’ll be covered with any care provider you choose — inside or outside of the network.
